Celebrating World Social Media Day

Did you know that yesterday (June 30th) was World Social Media Day?

Oh yes, there’s a day to celebrate Social Media (SM) too!

Launched by Mashable in 2010, SM day was born as a way to recognize it’s impact on global communication.

SM has transformed our world in ways that couldn’t have been predicted. The evolution of communication from telephones & fax to the ever-growing world of SM has been nothing short of magical.

The 1st ever social network was Six Degrees, in 1997, used to upload photos & connect with others.

Founded by Andrew Weinreich in May 1996, the site had popular features such as profiles, friends lists and school affiliations in one service.

Interestingly, LinkedIn started in 2002, was the first major platform on the SM landscape. Yet, it took a pandemic for a major chunk of us to be active in that platform.

Fast forward to 2020, SM has become so prominent & also extremely controversial, with its use & abuse, reaching its all time high.

Recently, UN announced the launch of ‘Pause’ initiative to counter misinformation, in efforts to create a kind of social norm of take-care-before-you-share.

Even a TV channel like Comedy Central came up with their Showfluencers Campaign this year, where they gave their audience the chance to choose their favourite show & its episodes, through SM, to be aired on the occasion.

From advertiser’s boycotting Facebook to Indian Government banning TikTok, the prelude to the celebrations have been extremely disappointing.

Does this indicate that the demise of SM is near? Or will SM ride on its unpredictability & surge again?
